The competitions did not occur on athletic fields, but students at Texas State Technical College have brought home 21 National Championships since 2004.
TSTC alumnus Jeremiah Stones won the most recent gold medal in Computer Programming at the 54th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, last June. In all, TSTC students won four medals at the conference – one silver and two bronze, in addition to the one gold. The SkillsUSA National Championships are part of the annual conference and are designed to showcase the best career and technical education students in the nation. More than 6,500 contestants competed in 103 separate events during the 2018 conference.
Although TSTC’s enrollment is relatively small when compared to Texas’ flagship schools or urban community colleges, the SkillsUSA competitions speak volumes about the quality of TSTC’s technical programs. TSTC has won more national SkillsUSA medals since 2004 than all other two-year and four-year Texas colleges combined. TSTC’s size clearly dictates that it does not provide the majority of all technical education in Texas; however, true to its statutory mission, TSTC is unmatched in the highly skilled and emerging technologies.
• TSTC is the No. 1 single provider of Welders in Texas.
• TSTC is the No. 1 single provider of Electrical Lineworkers in Texas. In fact, TSTC provides 80 percent of them.
• TSTC is the No. 1 single provider of Diesel Mechanics in Texas.
• TSTC is the No. 1 single provider of Electrical Power & Control Technicians in Texas.
• TSTC is the No. 2 single provider of Instrumentation Technology Technicians in Texas.
• TSTC is the No. 2 single provider of all Aerospace training in Texas, and the only provider of Air Traffic Controllers.
Taken together, these statistics demonstrate measurable results for Texas, which means TSTC produces extraordinary returns on the state’s investment of tax dollars in the College!
