Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Specialist

 

Texas State Technical College offers hands-on experience with diesel engines and power systems.  Transportation demands keep growing, providing a high demand for diesel mechanics technicians.   As more industries use diesel for their vehicles and equipment like- oil rigs, power plants, hydraulic systems, locomotives, cargo ships, farming equipment, construction vehicles, mining equipment, more technicians need to be trained in the field of diesel mechanics.


Course Information

 
Diesel Shop Safety and Procedures & Diesel Preventative Maintenance

A study of shop safety, rules, basic shop tools, and test equipment. The student will identify and use basic hand tools; use human protection equipment; and correctly use and dispose of hazardous materials. This course provides an introduction to vehicle preventive maintenance and inspection. The focus will be on maintaining and inspecting the engine system, cab and hood, electrical and electronics, and frame and chassis components. Students learn how to properly service vehicle systems and perform a visual inspection of all vehicle components. Students also learn how to properly document all maintenance and inspection findings.


Diesel Engine Testing and Repair I, II
This course provides an introduction to testing and repairing diesel engines, including related systems specialized tools.


Power Train & Diesel Tune-up/Trouble shooting I, II
This course prepares students to fundamental repair and theory of power trains including clutches, drive shafts, and differentials. Emphasis on inspection and repair. This course has two phases. Power Train I, II and includes Tune-ups & Troubleshooting.  


Tractor Trailer Service and Repair
An introduction to and familiarization with components and systems related to tractor-trailer service. Emphasis on records required by the Department of Transportation.

    Program Information

    • 232 Hours program hours of training.
    • Tuition for training is $4,500.
    • Classes held Monday through Friday
    • Day classes from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    • Night class from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m.
